Hearing Impaired Pre-School & Primary Outreach (HIPPO)

Hearing Impaired Pre-School & Primary Outreach

What is H.I.P.P.O?

Hearing Impaired Pre-School and Primary Outreach Service is based at Icknield Primary School and serves the whole of Luton Borough.

H.I.P.P.O receives referrals primarily from Audiology services either at Luton & Dunstable Hospital or Community Audiology services based at Liverpool Road. The Newborn Hearing Screening Program (NHSP) means that increasingly large numbers of babies are identified as having hearing impairment from 4-6 weeks after birth. However, some referrals still come from these services when then child is of pre-school or school age. A few referrals are received from neighbouring authorities as families move areas.

Links with Community Audiology, ENT at Luton & Dunstable Hospital and paediatricians at the Edwin Lobo Centre are vital to the work of HIPPO. We also work closely with Integrated Services for Children with Additional Needs (ISCAN) and Speech and Language Therapy teams.
