English Writing
At Icknield Primary School, we believe that every child can become a confident, capable and enthusiastic writer. Our English Writing Roadmaps have been carefully designed to support children in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to communicate effectively through writing.
Across each year group, children are immersed in a rich range of high-quality, engaging texts which provide inspiration and meaningful contexts for writing. Children explore the language, structure and features of these texts before using what they have discovered to create their own extended pieces of writing.
Our writing curriculum is carefully sequenced so that important skills are revisited, reinforced and progressively developed throughout a child's time at primary school. Rather than learning a skill once and moving on, children have regular opportunities to practise and apply their knowledge in increasingly sophisticated ways. This enables them to build a secure understanding of vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, organisation and the different features associated with a range of text types and genres.
Through our Writing Roadmaps, children are supported to become writers who can write for different purposes and audiences, make thoughtful choices about language and structure, and take pride in the quality of their work. They learn to plan, draft, edit and improve their writing, developing increasing independence along the way.
Most importantly, we want children to see themselves as real writers: willing to experiment with language, share their ideas, respond to the world around them and enjoy the power of the written word.
