Icknield Primary

The primary stage specialist provision for children with hearing loss in Luton is based at Icknield Primary School. This provision is for children with a bilateral permanent severe or profound hearing loss and children within the provision have an EHC Plan.

Our approach to teaching is to meet the needs of the child and so a variety of communication methods are used within the school. We use Sign Supported English most during the early years and Key Stage 1. Some children need this to continue but others shift to a more auditory/oral approach and use spoken English to communicate and make maximum use of their hearing through technology to access spoken language. We also have some children for whom British Sign Language is a key communication tool.

We run weekly sign language classes for parents with our Deaf Tutor and there are also specific BSL lessons for identified children within the school day.

Rogers systems that are linked to the child’s hearing aids or cochlear implant are used to further enable our children to best access spoken language. Both halls have soundfield systems to ensure that all children have equal opportunity to the auditory experience as well as the visual. Some classrooms also have soundfield systems in place and wherever possible we accommodate our children within these rooms.

So we best meet needs of our children, Teachers of the Deaf may withdraw children and teach small groups of developmentally similar children or support them to be part of a mainstream class. They are included into classes for art, PE, music and additional subjects according to their individual needs. Deaf children follow the same curriculum as all children but language development is supported by visual cues, photos, video clips, animations, story props and targeted vocabulary. Educational Communicators (EC) and Teaching Assistants (TA) help to support the children in both settings.

We work with a number of agencies including professionals from cochlear implant teams, audiology centres, Occupational Therapists and outreach service for autistic, visually impaired and complex needs children. We are also fortunate to work with Magic Words Therapy who provide Speech and Language Therapy four days a week at the HI Provision.
